Before the Civil War, there was John Brown and his “raiders.” The fiery abolitionist led an armed revolt, and hoped to ignite a national slave rebellion in the process. Amongst these raiders was Dangerfield Newby, the first martyr of the revolt. Though a freed slave himself, Newby’s wife and children remained captive. As depicted in his portrait on the Revolution Tee, Newyby’s burdens are heavy; the bags under his eyes hold the weight of decades of persecution and a family ripped apart. Yet his determination is equally felt, his steely glare and tidy groom reveal an unbroken spirit. A prelude to Collection Two.
